One of the challenges of offering a course on sustainable development to 'dark suits' is overcoming stereotypical views about things 'environmentalist'. If you're an environmentalist then, by definition, you must be anti-business because, after all, it's business activity that is doing most to stuff up the natural environment. However, while some commentators remain sceptical, an increasing number of businesses are finding that a corporate strategy based on sustainable development is a solid foundation for business success (measured in capitalist terms). The business case for and against sustainable development was articulated extremely well by the Future Foresight Consulting Group and Greened-Out Consulting in class recently in the context of GM's recent poor performance.
